credit report letter of dispute
How long does it take for changes to appear on your credit report after filing a dispute letter?
I found some erroneous entries in my credit report. I mailed a letter last Friday. How soon should I expect the errors to be corrected? Will I receive a letter from the credit bureau? A phone call? Or will the change just appear on the report?
Studily is correct in the description of the verification process when you file a dispute with the credit bureaus. However, I recommend waiting till you get a response from the credit bureau before sending validation requests to the creditor. Sometimes errors are actually resolved on the first go round.
If the item isn’t removed, then send a certified, return receipt letter to the creditor requesting validation to include copies of contracts or other documentation proving this is your debt. Give them 30 days.
If they fail to respond, send another dispute to the credit bureau with a copy of your validation request. Indicate that the creditor failed to validate the debt. It has to be removed.
If they do respond, use the evidence to fight it out with the creditor.
Studily isn’t as correct when it comes to suing over the errors. It isn’t quite that easy and you have to have actual proof that the error is harming your credit. The credit bureau is covered because the creditor verified — that’s considered reasonable investigation. The creditor could be covered by the documentation they have — same or similar name, SS#, etc.
