Can I purchase a home with a foreclosure on my credit report?
My x-wife foreclosed a home that was in our names and it’s on my credit report. She never told me this was going to happen and I discovered it when I was checking my credit report. I want to purchase a home but am afraid it will be a problem now.
If the divorce decree left the house strictly her responsibility, and she then foreclosed on it, you could probably dispute it with the credit bureaus to have it removed from your report. Be prepared to send EACH credit bureau a certified copy of the divorce decree showing where the house was solely left to her. Why did you not have your name removed from the deed after the divorce if the house was given to her? Oh well—-hindsight is 20/20, isn’t it? As long as the foreclosure is present on your credit report, it most definately will prevent you from buying another home anytime soon. The banks dont want to hear your story about the x-wife and how she screwed you over….all they care about is what your report is telling them. And right now, it’s telling them that you’ve already defaulted on a bank loan. Dispute the entry with each bureau, explain (briefly) the problem, and supply them with the documents to support your case. Then give them about 3 months to investigate it before you check your credit report again.
