credit report request by mail
credit report request by mail
I’m trying to get my free credit report through the mail, what do I need to do?
I’m a Canadian and I’ve found out that every Canadian is entitled to request their credit report for free every year but it must be done through the mail. I’m going to fax my information to the office that will process it, does anyone know what I need to include in the information? I need 2 types of ID right? Will my driver’s license and passport be good enough? What else will they need?
Please stop suggesting freecreditreport.com, that’s an american site and i’m canadian.
Truthfully here in Canada you are entitled to unlimited free credit reports by mail, you can keep sending in the requests and supporting documentation and they will keep sending updated credit reports.
First, if you have a credit card you can request your “free” credit report through an automated telephone feature of both Equifax and Transunion (the credit card is used for identity verification and is not charged). The numbers are:
Equifax: 1-800-663-9980
Transunion: 1-800-465-7166
The catch-22 of the telephone system is you need a pretty good idea of what is on your credit report already to get through their identity verification process. If this fails then you can mail in your request to Equifax, Transunion and Experian:
http://www.equifax.com/EFX_Canada/consumer_information_centre/ownreport_e.html
http://www.transunion.ca/ca/personal/creditreport/consumerdisclosure/mail_en.page
http://www.creditbureau.ca/ENGLISH/your_file.htm
In addition to the completed forms provided by each CRA you typically need to send a photocopy of the front and back of your primary ID (Drivers Licence, Passport etc) and then a secondary proof (copy of a recent utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address, or a photocopy of a credit card in your name).
Through the telephone service you should receive your credit report in 1-2 weeks, for a mail-in request the turn-around time is typically between 2-4 weeks.
This credit report will NOT include your credit score, and the only way to get your “official” credit score is to pay for it.
Hope this was some help!
